There is a little copper misting bottle on the shelf above the printers in Jill’s garage. It has been empty since roughly the spring of 2019. We keep it because it is pretty, and because it is a useful prop for the argument we are about to have with you.
Misting is how most people are told to water an air plant, and it is the method least likely to keep one alive. If your tillandsia is browning at the tips and curling in on itself despite a spritz every other day, that is not bad luck. That is the spray bottle. Everything else we have learned about keeping these things going is in our full air plant care guide. This post is only about water.
What the plant is actually doing when it drinks
Tillandsia absorb water through trichomes, the silvery scales covering their leaves. Trichomes are not instant. They swell, open, and pull moisture in over a period of minutes, which is the single fact that settles the soak-versus-mist argument before it starts.
A mist sits on the leaf for maybe ninety seconds in a heated house before it evaporates. The trichomes have barely gotten started. A soak gives them twenty uninterrupted minutes of contact, and the plant comes out visibly greener and noticeably heavier. You can feel the weight difference in your hand. That is not poetry, it is water.
The soak: our default, and the one we recommend
An air plant soak means the whole plant goes under room-temperature water and stays there.
- How long: 20 to 30 minutes. Under ten minutes is a long dunk. Over an hour starts working against you, and overnight soaks are how people wake up to rot.
- How often: weekly for the green, smooth, mesic types like ionantha and brachycaulos. Every ten to fourteen days for the silver, fuzzy, xeric ones like xerographica and tectorum.
- Water temperature: room temp. Not straight off a cold tap in November.
- After: shake it out hard, upside down, and let it dry base-up on a towel.
Jill does all of hers at once on Sunday morning in a mixing bowl on the counter, which takes about four minutes of actual effort and lets her forget about them for the rest of the week. Caryn does hers in the clean side of the kitchen sink after a night shift, which is roughly the same procedure performed by someone who is not entirely awake.
The dunk: fine for Tuesday, not fine forever
A dunk is a 10 to 30 second plunge, swish, and shake. It puts real water on the leaves, unlike misting, and it takes almost no time.
Where it earns its place: a plant glued or wired into a display you cannot easily remove, a mesic plant in a very dry house that needs a midweek top-up between soaks, or a week when you genuinely do not have twenty minutes. It also suits a xerographica better than a full soak does, because that species’ crown holds standing water like a soup bowl.
Where it fails: as the only thing you ever do. Dunk-only plants slide downhill over a couple of months. They shrink slightly, the leaves stiffen and curl, and the tips crisp from the outside in. Then one day you soak one and it plumps up like it has been rescued, because it has.
So what is misting good for?
Humidity, not hydration. Those are different jobs and the spray bottle only does one of them.
If your house is running at 25% humidity in February because the furnace never stops, a daily mist raises the local moisture around the leaves for a while and makes the stretch between soaks less punishing. It is also the right tool for a newly separated pup that is too small to fish out of a bowl, and for the first week after you have mounted something on cork bark and do not want the mount soaked.
What it is not: a watering method. We would rather you soaked a plant once a month and never touched a spray bottle than misted it daily and never soaked it at all. Somebody will disagree with that in the comments, and we will cheerfully hold the line.
Which water, honestly
Tap water works. Ours is ordinary Pennsylvania municipal water and the plants have been fine on it for years. If yours smells strongly of chlorine, let a bowl sit out overnight before you use it.
Rainwater and aquarium water are better, because they bring trace minerals along for the ride. Distilled and reverse-osmosis water are the ones to avoid as a steady diet. They have had the minerals stripped out, and a plant on nothing but distilled water for six months gets visibly duller and slower.
The drying step is part of the watering step
This is where people lose plants, and it is why we harp on it.
Water trapped in the crown after a soak has nowhere to go. It sits against the base, the tissue softens, and the plant rots from the middle outward while looking perfectly healthy from across the room. Turn the plant over. Shake it like you are trying to get the last of the ketchup out. Leave it upside down on a towel with air moving over it until it is dry to the touch, which should take under four hours.
If a plant is still damp at hour six, the problem is the spot. Not enough airflow, not enough light, or a container that traps humidity. Closed glass globes are the usual culprit here, which is why every holder we design in the garage has open sides. We print them to order from plant-based PLA, usually overnight, and a pot that lets air through is not a styling choice. It is the difference between a plant that dries and a plant that does not.
Did you get it right?
A well-watered air plant is firm, slightly heavier than you expect, and its leaves sit open rather than clenched. An underwatered one curls inward, feels light, and goes papery at the tips. An overwatered one is not limp all over. It is soft specifically at the base, and the center leaves lift out with no resistance.
Check the base with two fingers once a month. It takes a second and it catches the only mistake that is actually fatal. If you want somewhere open-sided to put the plant while it dries, that is what we make.
