About once a month somebody emails the shop asking whether we’d print a pot without the drainage hole. Usually because it’s going on a desk, or a bookshelf, or a piece of furniture that belonged to somebody’s grandmother, and the idea of water coming out the bottom of anything is unacceptable. It’s a completely reasonable ask and the answer is still no.
Not because we’re purists. Because Caryn and I have both killed plants in sealed pots and we know exactly how it goes: fine, fine, fine, fine, dead in a week. Every pot that comes off the 30-odd printers in our Pennsylvania garage has a hole in the bottom, and it’s the one design decision we’ve never revisited.
But the question underneath the email is a fair one, and it’s the one worth answering: which plants will actually tolerate a pot with no way out?
No plant needs it. Some plants forgive it.
Let’s be precise, since the phrase “plants that don’t need drainage holes” gets used two very different ways. There is no houseplant that grows better with its roots in a closed container. What exists is a group of plants that tolerate the risk well enough that a careful person can get away with it.
The mechanism is simple. In a pot with a hole, gravity pulls excess water out and air follows it into the soil. Roots need that air as much as they need the water. In a sealed pot, the bottom inch or two stays saturated permanently, oxygen disappears, and the anaerobic bacteria that cause root rot get a rent-free apartment. The plant above ground looks fine the entire time this is happening, which is the cruel part.
So “tolerant” here means one of two things: the plant stores its own water and is used to drought cycles, or it’s genuinely semi-aquatic and doesn’t mind wet feet.
The plants that handle it best
Snake plant (Sansevieria). The most forgiving of the lot, because it wants to go bone dry between waterings anyway, so a cautious pour every three or four weeks leaves plenty of time for the bottom to draw down. It’s also the one people most often ruin in a sealed pot, because it’s slow enough that you don’t notice for months. Worth knowing: snake plant is listed as toxic to dogs and cats by the ASPCA.
Pothos. Roots happily in a glass of plain water, which tells you most of what you need to know about its tolerance for saturation. In soil in a sealed pot it does fine if you underwater it deliberately. Pothos is listed as toxic to dogs and cats by the ASPCA.
Spider plant. Tough, fast to tell you when it’s unhappy (brown tips, floppy centre), and quick to recover if you catch it. Spider plant is listed as non-toxic to dogs and cats by the ASPCA, which is why it ends up in a lot of households with a cat who chews.
ZZ plant. Underground rhizomes that store water like little potatoes, so it’s structurally built for drought and handles a dry sealed pot better than almost anything. Note that ZZ (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) doesn’t appear on the ASPCA’s toxic or non-toxic lists at all; veterinarians generally treat it as toxic and advise keeping it away from pets that chew.
Air plants. The obvious cheat. No soil, no pot, no drainage question. If you want the look of a closed vessel with none of the risk, this is the answer we give most often.
Cuttings in water, and lucky bamboo. Not soil growing at all, but people count them, and they genuinely belong in a sealed container.
The ones that will punish you
Succulents and cacti. Every list on the internet puts them in the tolerant column because they need so little water, and that logic is exactly backwards: they need so little water that the small amount you give them has nowhere to go and sits there for a month. We lost an entire tray of echeveria this way in 2023, in pretty little sealed ceramic cups, and the leaves went translucent from the bottom up. Also on the list: calathea, ferns, alocasia, anything with fine hairlike roots, and anything you paid more than $30 for.
How to water a plant in a pot without drainage holes
If you’re committed, this is the technique. It’s not hard, it’s just deliberate.
- Measure. Pour roughly a quarter of the pot’s volume, and no more. For a standard 6-inch pot that’s about half a cup. Use an actual measuring cup for the first month until your hand learns it.
- Pour slowly, around the edge. Fast water channels straight down the sides and pools at the bottom without wetting the middle.
- Check with a stick. A wooden chopstick pushed to the bottom and pulled out tells you the truth. Dark and damp at the tip means wait. Clean and dry means water.
- Tip it out. If you overdo it, hold the soil surface with your hand and tilt the pot over the sink for ten seconds. This works and almost nobody does it.
- Use a chunky mix. Bark, perlite, pumice. More air pockets means the water that does collect has somewhere to sit that isn’t against a root.
One thing to skip: the layer of gravel in the bottom. It’s the most persistent piece of bad advice in houseplant care. Water doesn’t move from fine soil into coarse gravel until the soil above is fully saturated, so a gravel layer raises the wet zone into the root ball instead of draining it. You’ve built a smaller pot with a rock basement.
The thing we’d actually do
Keep the plant in its plastic nursery pot, with all its holes, and drop that inside the pretty sealed vessel. Water it in the sink, let it drain for five minutes, put it back. Empty anything that collects in the bottom.
You get the look, the plant gets the physics, and the only cost is lifting a pot once a week. We use this at home for a couple of vessels we like too much to drill. It also means you can swap the plant out in about four seconds when you get bored, which is more often than either of us wants to admit.
Why we print the hole anyway
A hole costs us nothing. It’s a shape in the model, the printer doesn’t care, it doesn’t add a minute to the roughly four hours a pot takes. Leaving it out would only make the thing worse at its one job.
